Since access control systems manage entrance into spaces, It grants or denies permission according to specific rules. In this article, I am going to show you 20 reasons why access could be denied.
- Unassigned credentials
- Unknown credentials
The physical access control chip, contained in a card or a badge … stores a unique identifier which is a credential. If a chip doesn’t correspond to an identifier, the system will not recognize it.

- Inactive credentials
- Expired credentials
- Stolen Credentials
- Lost credentials
Temporary credentials expire, and when a card is lost, the access control manager turns its credential to inactive.
- Insufficient privileges
- Denied by access rule
- No access rule assigned
Access rules is a combination of who, where and when values. Every cardholder has access rules. No way to access to any apace which is not within one’s access rules,
- Out of schedule
If a cardholder tries to access outside his schedules, the access is denied
- First person in rule supervisor absent
We can set access to a specific area dependent on whether the supervisor is already there or not.
- Host is required
- Inactive cardholder
A system manager can deactivate a cardholder.
- Interlock
Interlock is two or many related doors, one unlocks if only another is closed, it’s also called a mantrap doors.
- Max occupancy reached
We can set a reader to calculate the entrances. When reaching a predetermined number, it denies access
- Valid card, inactive PIN
- Valid card, invalid PIN
- Invalid PIN
- Card and PIN timeout
Keypad card readers require a PIN in a specific time after swiping a card,
- Antipassback violation
Access control could not accept to reswipe a card few seconds after a first swipe.
